The Cage is You

(Written April 28, 2011)

Carry the weight of unforgiveness

Withhold it

The burden is heavy and cumbersome, but you deserve it

Lug it around with you wherever you go!

Let it affect all your moves and determine your moods

Your destiny—your purpose unfulfilled

But it’s not your fault that you aren’t full

How could you let go of such an important event?

It shaped you, molded you and now it holds you

But you deserve it

They owe you! How could you go free from it?

It’s not your fault

You never asked for the unhappiness; it’s just what was given

Without request it came

But you are not to blame

Pain was dealt to you, a result of someone else’s deed

How could you let that go?

It’s part of you. It was given, now you accept your fate

But they didn’t give you the anger. That’s yours

The darkness that blocks the light? You keep it there

Resentment? It takes it’s share and more!

That was born afterward, your child and yours alone

They planted the seed! But you let it grow

The numbness? Yours.

The hiding? Your game alone

“I need it” you say, but you don’t

“I have to” echoes but that’s actually not true either

“But you don’t understand!” Don’t I?

I wish I didn’t but I sure do!

Here, let me see what you hold in your hands

Bitterness-it takes up a lot of room

Hate, jealousy—none of that was bestowed upon you

You adopted it yourself—willingly

“You mean I can let it go?” Yes

“It’s that easy?” No, never. But that simple, yes

What was put upon you is a shame

But now you hold all this other captive

Drag it around as if it was a blanket for the impending bitter cold

“I am to blame.” For this? Yes, you are actually.

For that disservice; for that ugly act

For the lack of love; the disdain

For a theft – a violent burst

A runaway

For this you have given your life, taken the shame

Tied to the event; chained

But you have the key

It’s right there in your hand!

Open it and it will flee

The cage is you

Let it go

There will be scars—a reminder or two

But that’s not your fate—they were wrong

You’ve been lied to

You had your reasons

But now they’re gone

They’ve left you alone

The chains are not locked—you’re holding on to them!

Pry your hands loose, you will see

Open yourself and self will be free
